How to Care for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

Suede and Nubuck: Beautiful but Delicate

Suede and nubuck are among the most luxurious shoe materials — soft, textured, and stylish. But they’re also more sensitive to water, stains, and dirt than smooth leather. With the right care routine, however, they’re surprisingly easy to maintain and can look great for years.

This guide covers everything you need to know about caring for suede and nubuck shoes at home.

What’s the Difference Between Suede and Nubuck?

Suede is made from the underside of animal hide, giving it a soft, velvety nap. Nubuck is made from the outer side of the hide, buffed to create a similar texture — but it’s slightly more durable. Both require the same care approach.

What You'll Need

  • A suede brush (with soft rubber or brass bristles)
  • A suede eraser or crepe rubber block
  • Suede and nubuck cleaner or protector spray
  • A clean, dry cloth

Step 1: Brush Away Dry Dirt

Always start with a dry shoe. Use a suede brush to gently brush away surface dirt, dust, and dried mud. Brush in one direction — following the grain of the nap — to avoid matting the fibres. Never use a stiff-bristle brush, which can damage the delicate texture.

Step 2: Tackle Scuffs with a Suede Eraser

For scuff marks or light stains, rub a suede eraser gently over the affected area. The eraser lifts the mark without wetting the material. Use light, back-and-forth strokes and brush away the residue afterwards.

Step 3: Restore the Nap

After cleaning, the nap (the raised fibres that give suede its texture) may look flat or uneven. Use your suede brush to gently brush the surface in one direction to restore the texture and even out the appearance.

Step 4: Apply a Suede Protector Spray

Prevention is the best care for suede and nubuck. Apply a suede protector spray to create an invisible barrier against water and stains. Hold the can 20–30 cm from the shoe and spray evenly across the entire surface. Allow to dry fully before wearing.

Step 5: Dealing with Wet Suede

If your suede shoes get wet, don’t panic — but don’t wear them until they’re dry. Stuff them with newspaper or a shoe tree to maintain their shape, and let them air-dry naturally at room temperature. Once dry, brush the nap back into shape. Never use a hairdryer or place them near a heater.

How Often Should You Care for Suede Shoes?

  • After every wear: Quick brush to remove dust and restore the nap.
  • Every 2–4 weeks: Full clean with eraser and brush.
  • Every 1–2 months: Reapply protector spray, especially before monsoon season.

What to Avoid

  • Never use water directly on suede — it causes staining and stiffening.
  • Avoid smooth leather polish or cream on suede — it will clog the nap.
  • Don’t store suede shoes in plastic bags — they need to breathe.
